Review of Homeworld and Comanche 4

Review of Homeworld:

There are certain games that come along every now and then that as well as being great fun to play do something so amazingly that they become part of gaming history. Homeworld is one of those games.
You play the part of commander of a fleet of starships trying to find their way to a long forgotten homeland. To help you do this you have some various generic RTS tools such as resource gathering via collector ships.
Research to help build more powerful offense and defense, and of course a wide variety of military spacecraft to help you fight the enemy pirates and defend your civilisation.
The thing that makes this game stand out above the rest is its use of the 3d environment. You have full control of the space all around you and enemies can attack from any angle. This makes mastering the controls at the start very confusing as in more RTS games you are used to viewing a 2d battlefield even if it is rendered in 3d. This adds a lot to the tactical awareness needed if you are to make it past some of the end levels.
Review of Comanche 4:
the front of the box claims "the worlds favourite PC helicopter action series." I'm pretty sure it holds that title because it is one of the only helicopter action series in the world. If it was compared to flight simulators in general it wouldn't stand out as anything special.
The game however is pretty fun to play. You take control of a Comanche gun ship and take part in various fictional missions around the world. The helicopter is pretty easy to start flying as all the controls have been simplified to make it more user friendly. There are series of tutorials to help you get started but they take nowhere near as long to go through as most flight sims. This means you can get straight into the action and start blasting away.
Because you are the biggest and baddest bird in the sky there is little in the form of challenging dog fights. Your biggest concern is taking on groups of enemies at once, but as long as you keep an eye on your surroundings and are patient enough to take targets out one by one this game does turn into a pretty easy arcade style shooter.
